Does Windows automatically compress files when copying new files into a folder with "Compress contents to save disk space" checked?

I am not a techie person, but I do have a lot of files. I was wondering if checking the “Compress contents to save disk space” in the properties of a folder automatically compresses files copied into it in the background, or is it a one-time thing?
