I'm trying to remove an incorrect email address from People in Mail. Nothing seems to work. Can anyone provide instructions?

I've been trying to remove incorrect and unwanted email addresses from Mail. I've tried numerous suggestions found on the web, but nothing worked. How can I delete unwanted email addresses???
