How to change C:/Users/username without messing with/breaking existing programs

I'm currently dissatisfied with the current username under my C:/Users/username folder. However, upon following this guide, using the Method 2 described, it managed to change it, but now I lost a lot of my desktop icons, background wallpaper, and I assume other important data for my applications before changing the filenames and usernames back so that it all got restored.
