My W: drive says its full but files available take up so little

For back ground, my pc is a little under I think 10 years old so it may just be faulty hardware. My w drive (my 1.8 tb hard drive) says its at near max capacity when ever I look at the properties. However, if I select every file in the drive and look at the properties, it says they take up 9 gb total, most of that 9 being fallout 3 with miscellaneous files. I've done disk clean ups and looked for hidden files. Neither have worked. I haven't tried any apps to clean it because I can't find one that one, newer, and two I can trust. I plan to have a look at the physical thing when I put my new gpu
