Hdmi 1.3 to hdmi 2.1

HP laptop EliteBook 840 G3 with 1.3 hdmi output (using adapter (1.3 to 2.1 ) to display to hdmi 2.1 tv, and will not work or show any connection. Are there any changes that I can make to solve this? Thanks James
