WinZip.

Charlie

My old version of WinZip was acting up,so I deleted it.Have tried to download
a newer version from several sites but get the message,"A device attached to
the System is not functioning".
I am using Win ME and am guessing that is the problem.Anyone know where I
can download a version compatable with Win ME??

Not too sure why you particularly need "WinZip". Are you aware that WinMe
has its own inbuilt version which allows you both 'zip' and 'unzip' files
and folders?

If your installation of WinMe doesn't seem to offer that facility, it may
have never been enabled therefore you may need to enable it.

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs / Windows Setup tab.
Scroll for System Tools and click 'Details', then under 'Components:',
Scroll for 'Compressed Folders' - Check the tick box to enable it.

For some strange reason my WinZip had disappeared from my start menu and
through this link I was able to reinstall version 9.0 with permission,
because I had purchased the previous version with accompanying registration
#.

I have to say though, Mart, it is a pita compared to Winzip - or indeed
Winrar or almost every other archiver. If you install Winrar then in
Configuration select Cascading Menus, then uncheck the lowest 4 of these,
i.e. the ones concerned with making as opposed to extracting, you can use
Winrar indefinitely - to unzip via the handy context menu and never be
nagged to register! Even if you stick with Compressed Folders to create
archives, Winrar to unzip them is far superior and really well worth
installing.

Meanwhile Winrar is better than Winzip and Compressed Folders, for a
superior compression algorithm. Of course, if you've registered either
Winzip or Winrar you can create self-extractors too.

Funny though - there are things that once known, the cat is out of the bag.
Winzip's corrected now, but from the version for Win 3.x up to Winzip 8.1
you can register it to 'x' with the code '00020000'. You know, once someone
tells you that, you can't forget it if you try! -) 8.1 was perfectly good,
of course, and you can doubtless find it still (though I dumped my copy
along with my NT4.0 stuff recently). Post Winzip 8.1 you get the
long-awaited command line add-on, so getting Winzip beyond 30 days without
nag screens, for free, by using 8.1 has it's disadvantages. And if you don't
really want self extractor or command line options, Compressed Folders to
zip and Winrar to unzip are a pretty good combo anyway, and what I'd
recommend.

Hey, Mart! If you want to continue investigating Vista without actually
paying a farthing for it, I can't see what Vista has that can't be
configured in the Server 2008 beta that is valid until next April! Aero is
growing on me. I could end up thinking it's bubblicious! And you can turn
the awful UAC off easily. Hard finding AV for it though, free or paid.
Obviously as a server it is expected to be behind a router rather than
software. And Windows Defender is part of the program (though SR isn't!) -
not that I'm filled to overflowing with confidence at that! I was going with
a Kaspersky beta -I trust it to essentially work, but it wouldn't update as
the key had expired (I downloaded it last night). Such are the trials of
beta testing, eh? Better try again, I suppose. Or go to bed.

Had a wash tonight! With half a bucket of water! By god it was fine! Back to
wet wipes for the rest of the week though. Thankfully they refilled the
nearest bowser tonight - there has been considerable doubt that they were
ever going to get round to it.

Well, guess I'll get down the garden before bed! Ironically around here when
I was a kid is the only place I was familiar with outside toilets (and to
demonstrate how weird nostalgia is I actually miss them!). Today there are
no walls though. It is an open plan outside lav.

In fairness Shane, I didn't argue the point for or against "bells'n
whistles", my response was to offer a simple and *free* solution to (what I
guessed was) an urgent problem. Further, I'd dumped WinZip years ago in
favour of the WinMe - and more so - the XP compression utilities, which have
always been quite satisfactory for my needs.

Pita compared to WinZip? - Not my experience. In fact I found WinZip and
WinRar were more complicated/fiddly (too many bells). However I don't use
compression very often (other than .jpg and .mp3 - where I have other
applications to take care of those file types). Most times, I only need to
unzip (downloaded drivers, for example) where the MS utilities have always
been perfectly adequate for me.

Regarding the (WinZip) key-code - I'd registered for mine in the Win98 (or
was that 95) days, but as I later found the MS WinMe (de)compression utility
worked fine, I never bothered to upgrade and so the key was effectively
wasted (on me).

Hmm.. I'll have a think about Vista <bg>

I see Germany has sent you a huge water tanker. Are they trying to muscle-in
on the French? One consolation, we can be assured that British water has
been passed. Only the Brits would vandalise a bowser. <shrug>

I think I looked at WinZip but ended up getting PowerArchiver which I
think for £19.99 bought the program and lifetime updates, and they work

I've had it several years now and it has gone through a couple of version
upgrades that needed new install keys and I've got them with no problem,
and the program is good to use even though I don't really use it too much

Hi Joan,

My guess (and from my own earlier experience) is that most users of WinZip
probably started out in the pre-WinMe days and therefore (bought?) installed
WinZip (or other 3rd-party utility). When they upgraded to WinMe, they
either didn't realize there was a compression utility included (possibly
because it was 'disabled' by duhfault), didn't realize that it opened (and
compressed) 'real' zip files or - because it effectively used a different
GUI - were so used to WinZip, maybe they couldn't be bothered with the WinMe
version.

However, being a 'tight-wad', £19.99 was a enough to make find out <g>

I don't get why you don't suppose it might have been the r-click context
menu options, Mart. But then I don't get how you can fail to appreciate
tabbed browsing, either. Unless - in both cases - you gave up before they
were configured, just threw it in and said you can't be arsed, and never
actually found out why these things are made?

They're not in the snake oil category, if that's what you think. I sometimes
wonder if you appreciate how insulting it is when you seem to suggest that
they are. Or that I'm the sort who's easily mesmerised by things that
glisten. Never mind all the others who use Winzip, Winrar, Infozip and the
other open source ones I forget the names of, favoured by people I freely
admit I'll never know as much as if I live to be 100.

Oh, and PowerArchiver.

Meanwhile you freely admit to rarely using archivers and after all, if you
don't know that we use them because they involve less clicking/less typing,
you obviously don't do a great deal of zipping/unzipping. While at the very
least tabbed browsing requires shorter mouse movements - but you don't have
multiple pages open at once, so you wouldn't know. OK, fine, your choice.
But trying to make either look like the rest of us are transfixed with
ephemera and only use this stuff because we haven't figured out the true
meaning of life - presumable because you're afraid you'll appear less than
'a guru', and what? You won't get the coveted pseudo-BSc/PhD to put after
your name?

The moment I bring a potentially interesting point up you act like I'm
trying to insinuate something. You must think that at any moment you'll be
discovered for a fake. Why else would you always go on the defensive when it
isn't called for and proffer offensive theories as to why we don't do what
you do? Or if you think adding a <g> or a smiley fools anyone but a fool and
allows you to be offensive and get away with it...well, not with me you
don't, not indefinately.

I'll tell you what, Mart. How about not supposing I'm so dull-witted you can
imply you know better than me? I use things like Winzip or Winrar because
they are more capable than Compressed Folders. And me and most of the
rest of the world think tabbed browsing is superior, because it is, simple
as that. If you want nothing to do with it, do, please yourself, but please
do, stop, trying to paint the rest of us as kids in order to come over as
wise.

Get the idea I've had enough?

I *will* be dealing with *he who talks at us all*, only the arguments are
more complicated and I am still really put out down here. In fact I'm
