Why is my windows not responding?

When I try to start up my computer it looks fine until I click to get to the log in screen and freezes before that. I can’t access any of the options that normally show at the bottom, and the keyboard doesn’t seem to work. Before this I was able to get into my computer but nothing was responding, I couldn’t even restart it, causing me to use the power button on the laptop to turn it off instead of shutting it down. I was met with the pop up “Microsoft windows not responding”
