Cannot get COM ports to work in windows 10

After either one or two Windows Updates the Ports (COM &LPT) option disappeared which now means I cannot connect to my GPS devices which I routinely have to for my work. I tried the "Action>Add Legacy Hardware>Install Manually>Ports (LPT & COM)>Standard Port Types>Communications Port" route and have managed to add two ports COM1 and COM5 (which was the default number for some reason). Each of these, however, have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark against them and are still not recognised. When looking at the properties the status is "This device cannot start. (
