Since Tuesday Sept 5th I've been unable to download photos from a USB drive to my laptop, or search for files. Can you help?

I can't download photos from a memory card via USB drive onto my laptop - started suddenly on Tuesday Sept 5th, when it also became impossible to search for specific files or emails. Any help gratefully accepted.
