How do I fix an hours long black screen upon restarting

I have windows 10 and whenever my laptop starts up, it’s just a back screen and the cursor. Whenever it finally does come to the desktop. Nothing will work. Everything has a lag and nothing will open. Like it’s processing so much. Why do I need to do so much to my computer to fix your poor product?
