Now 2 Microsoft accounts, 1 bad and not working because of old verification email address problems

Trying to fix a friends Microsoft account that had a hotmail email address. The verification email address for the account was the person web page email address which no longer works. The hotmail password had been changed before hotmail became outlook. When trying to log into the Microsoft account, the password for hotmail would not work, to change the password Microsoft wanted to send the verification code to the persons second email address that was no longer active. I somehow managed to get a password reset and replaced the persons second email address that he no longer had with a new gmail
