How do I recover my keyboard and mouse functions in windows after an update disabled them?

I used an xbox one Bluetooth controller for years on windows 10. Then stopped using my pc for gaming because I allowed someone to use my PC for remote work during Covid. I was gifted a video game on steam years later but steam suggested I get the latest driver update from Microsoft for the xbox controller. I installed the update via Microsoft update, and it said windows needed a reboot. Upon reboot all usb is dead, and the mouse and keyboard don’t work. This is now dire because the computer is still needed for the remote work. It’s a dual boot machine so I swapped through the bios into Linux
