Why does Signal Enhancements under Headphone Properties > Advanced cause an echo in my headphones?

It's an odd problem but one that has bothered me for awhile. When using my headphones I hear an echo or distortion like the sound is coming in an empty auditorium. It occurred for me on multiple Windows 10 machines and with multiple headphones. This bugged me the heck out, to the point where I started switching on and off any sound setting I could find. Behold the solution which eluded me and multiple iterations of this question on Google, turn off Signal Enhancements in Headphone Properties > Advanced settings. Now everything is back to normal.
