My computer lags when plugged in, specifically when playing a game (The Sims).

My laptop (HP Pavillion) lags the second I plug it in but only when playing the sims 4 and other PC games. What can I do to fix it? I followed the advice on this post: Redirecting it helped some, but didn't fix the problem completely.
