Security Software for ME

L

Lynn Quinlan

Hi there,

Sorry to say I've asked this question before but have mislaid the answer.
Can you give me recommendations for various packages to run on a 7-year-old
Win ME system that are free? I'm looking for:

Antivirus
Antispyware/Malware
Pop-up blocker/ad blocker
Antiphishing
Firewall

Anything else I should have installed to keep this system secure. Would I
be better running FireFox rather than IE6?

This is a 433 MHz Celeron system with 192 MB of RAM.

Also, need to clean this system up. What would you recommend for
defragmenting and removing left-over files? Any other suggestions would be
most welcome.

Thank you!

Lynn

Some people think so, I don't, if it's doing the job for you.

Firefox 3, when it comes out.

Firefox 3 when it comes out.

Comodo but be warned it does more than most and can be quite chatty at
first. This is normal and it will calm down after awhile. It will also
pop up if you install something, asking you if you really want to do it.
Set it to "install" and it will pop up and ask you if you want to go
back to the previous mode. If you're done with the install, say yes, if
not, no. I also recommend getting a router and enabling its firewall. I
like Edimax routers.

All the above are free except the router.

IE 6 is history but with your hardware, you might want to wait on
Firefox until ver 3.0 comes out and the memory leak problem is fixed.

Crap Cleaner at www.ccleaner.com. Use the clean up and issues features,
reboot and run the issues again. Back up what you do with the issues.
Then defrag the machine.

Sheesh, Harry......you know nothing about Firefox. Don't go offering
Beta Versions to noobs. It probably is one that the *experts* are still
ironing the bugs out of.

We who use FF do NOT use beta versions. That is for the techy geeks,
like TomV, grin.

Now behave!!

Hi, Heather,

Now that's the first time I've been called a "techy geek." :) You must
be thinking of someone else. I've not tried the FF3 beta (currently
beta 4) however, I think your advice to not offer beta software to a
newbie is well placed. If the OP is interested in Firefox, I'd
recommend FF2.

I'm glad I happened by the ME newsgroup today to see your comment. )

Cheers,
Tom

You smacked me so bad, I'm all red in my face.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I realized the contoversy, but couldn't
resist the consequences. That can't be all bad, can it???
The way it is offered, there shouldn't be any problems with it.
Aren't we all 'developers', in one way or another?
Why not 'have some fun'!
Let's move fully into the 21st. century.

Be careful what you suggest with the handcuffs. It may perk Webster's
interest. )

Just to rub it in a bit, it hit 80 degrees today in the Southwestern
U.S. It's a bit warm for this time of the year, but Spring does arrive
here early. Stay warm. :)

Trouble?...what trouble???
There's none around here!
If you need some help with 'developing', just come to my house.
But you've got to make an appointment with my secretary.
We work a 24/7 shift.
Think you can keep up? <H>.
