Son no longer shows in my family group, but still shows part of the group under his account and so I can't invite him back because of it.

It says my son left the family group, but he did not. Now he doesn't show up in my parent account, but when I go to his account he is still shown as part of my family. I tried inviting him back, but it says he is already a part of a family group. I have checked his account, there is NO BUTTON that says leave family group as per other help threads, and he is not part of any other family. So it's just one giant loop that we can't get out of, it's maddening. Please help!
