Unopened files are consonantly (daily basis) being shown within my Recent Files.

Why are old files popping up in my recent files in explorer when I have not interacted with those files or any that might be associated with them? This is now happening on a daily basis with batches of files being shown as being open as recent as the last minute from the time I have just logged on to my PC.
