My windows 10 computer moving files

I need some help My computer is running Windows 10.. when I go to transfer files from my phone to an external hard drive, if it's any more that 2 gig it says not enough space and stops, when I'm reality there is a terabyte. Do I have to manually transfer a few files at a time. My old computer that I replaced with this one, would transfer full hard drives to bigger ones over night. Anyone have any suggestions please?
