Can I install M/S Essentials Server on a new box and promote it to replace the Server2012r2 Primary Domain Controller currently in place?

We have a (now depreciated) Domain Controller running Server 2012r2 standard. We'd like to replace that box with a new one and (obviously) have a supported O.S.It's a small non-profit (total # users less than 12) and Essentials might be easier to install and maintain (there is no on site network engineer); in addition the office is eligible for a nice discount on Essentials.The question is - once the OS is installed on the new box can we promote it to replace the current D/C so that we don't have to reconfigure every p.c. in the office?It seems a simple question but I've seen opposing answers
