restoring windows to a virtual machine

Hello ---- About 3 weeks ago my win 10 / 32bit OS crashed. The hardware was very older and in it was its time I was able to restore the OS as a vmware VM -- its slow but I can access data from it which is what I needed But, the issue now is that it "not activated" I got to win10 from win7 --- my copy of win7 is the retail version win7 pro, I tried to use the (genuine) win7 key from my copy but that did not work --- So how to I get my win10 (in the vm) activated?
