Ad-Aware

I know that this post does not belong here but I have no choice this is the
only place I will get an answer. I have no Ad-aware SE, since December 31,
2007 you can not get definition updates and they tell you to get Ad-Aware
2007, but it seems that it does not support Windows 98, and I have Windows
98. Does anybody know of a solution?

Sol,

I just updated my copy of Ad-Aware SE with a definitions file dated Feb
18, 2008 (SE1R221), so we Win98SE users may not be completely out of
luck just yet.

Did you try the Lavasoft support forums?
I found these there:

"Spybot Search & Destroy is still carrying Windows98 capability
http://www.safer-networking.org/

"If you are still going to use Windows 98, Keep using Ad-Aware SE
1.06r "

Install Ad-Aware SE again, for now. Updates are still available manually. Alan
posted a link in his reply to get the program. Robear linked directions to manually
update.

The updates can be downloaded from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/
Look on the right side of the page. Updates are linked for both versions of
Ad-Aware.

Ad-Aware manual updating :
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

Unzip the contents of the file to the Ad-Aware SE installation directory,
which usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE".

If still having problems updating, go to
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE and delete the files
"defs.ref" and "defs.ref.old"

Since MS has marketed two fundamentally different
(NTFS) OSs since Win98, most software vendors make
no attempt to support Win98. For example, Canadian
income tax programs for year 2007 will not run under
Win98 although those for year 2006 did. This is "the
new normal."

I have no use for AdAware anymore, am now using Spyware Terminator,
http://www.spywareterminator.com/, which still works on Win98SE. As a
non-techie observer, I think that Spyware Terminator works better than
AdAware, gives updates Mon-Fri, allows fast or complete scan. Along
with Spyware Blaster, Avast, Sygate Personal Firewall, my computer
seems very secure.

I am using Spyware Terminator version 2.0.1.224, although they say
there is a previous "no longer support" version 1.9 which is Win98SE
specific, 2.0.1.224 seems to work fine on my 98SE computer.

As a non-techie too, i got fed up with Ad-Awares corporate response and how they ditched 98users,,,
and i dont care about the manual downloads, for if they can be downloaded manually, then how simple
would it be to program them to d/l automatically???

As such, I found a Much better proggy,, its called A-squared and it now puts adaware to shame,,
for many reasons.

check it n' see.....................

I'm beginning to see a Macintosh computer in my future. I have hated
XP since the first time I saw the ugly thing. I occasionally run
Win2k when I want to swap hard drives. I will not touch any MS
bloatware above Win2k, and still prefer Win98. The problem is that a
PC is useless without MS software. OK, Linux exists too, but linux is
for geeks who want to spend their lives tinkering with their computer.
I'm sure there are others, particularly on this newsgroup, who refuse
to upgrade. Where are we all going to go when we cant use 98 anymore?
I see no other options except a Mac, or just giving up on computers
entirely.

I was just about to ask the same question about Adaware so thanks for the
answers everyone. What about a free replacement for Zonealarm which no
longer supports W98? Anyone any ideas please?

I've alwys been happy with Kerio Personal Firewall 2.15. Small memory use.

But they moved on to 4.x - I don't know in what way it was found
wanting: there are some advisories here:

The Ad-Aware SE folder default location is
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE
(there are other folders within that folder - Lang - Plug ins - Skins)
The definitions should be unzipped into the main - AdAware SE personal
folder, not the "skins" folder.
(The main AdAware folder contains files like "Ad-Aware.exe" -
"alert.wav" - "defs.ref" and "defs.ref.old etc. as well as the other
support folders listed above)

Drag or cut/paste the downloaded unzipped latest "defs.ref" into the main
Ad-Aware folder and you will be asked if you want to replace the current
one.
Select "yes" and the latest definition dates will be reflected in the
Ad-Aware control panel

Ad-Aware has some strange update "features" lately.
On a WinXP PC, an attempt to update resulted in "no update available" but
a manual update resulted in a 10 day addition to "definitions". :)

Re: Ad-Aware and Zonealarm.

Hello:

You can still use Zone Alarm v6.1.744.1, which was the last version to
support Win 98/ME.
See: http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/tech/907/ .

Note that the Zone Alarm site contradicts the File Hippo site and states
that "Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me
operating system." Click on the "Systems Requirements" link at:
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp .

From what I could tell, no new functionality was added to Zone Alarm Free
edition between v6.1.x and v7.0.x. It seems that the new functionality was
added only to the Pro (paid) version of ZA.

Cheers,
O.J.
