Why is my windows refusing to update, no matter what I do?

For the last 2-3 years, my windows has refused to update overall, and no matter what I try to do overall, it just does not want to update. I think I've tried almost everything, apart from factory resetting (although I do not want to remove any of my files, as most of them are important) and I do want to keep everything that I've downloaded and whatnot. Is there a way that this can be fixed? Any sort of tips are helpful, and Ill try what I can!Thank you in advance!
