If I buy an external 5GHz adapter would this be solved or would I still be stuck with 100mb due to laptop max limit ?

I got an old laptop: HP pavilion i7 1000gb HD. The laptop internet limit is only 100mbps 2.4 GHz (standard) as I checked on its settings. I'd like to know if I'd bought an external 5GHz adapter that would've increased the internet efficiency considering the laptop limit of 100mbps for internet connection. Even if I use a Ethernet cable (hardwired) the max internet I can get is 100mbps. Could this be solved if I buy an external 5GHz adapter or would I still be stuck with 100mb due to laptop limit - This is the max limit I tried to change in settings ????? Please
