numeral over skype first in red and then white in taskk bar

How do i get rid of the 1 that is on the skype icon in taskbar (lower left) and in the skype window (image on the right). it shows first as red. clicking on it does nothing.at most it changes the red to white. there are no messages or anything to see. i had no chats. how can put the settings that i don't get these to being with? i want to get rid of both of them. clicking on them does nothing, just changes the color back and forth. i have turned notifications off.
