How do I get out of the boot lop and get to my desktop.

My computer entered into a boot loop saying it was having trouble booting and would restart, the error code is UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. This started after it said it needed to update. With past computers if I have ever had an issue with booting it either fixed itself or I was able to get to recovery mode (restarting and getting to the options)and go through those steps. I cannot get anywhere… it just does the loop over and over again! Any ideas?
