How do I get my HP external monitor to display again and get rid of a ghost monitor?

I have an HP EliteBook hooked up to an external HP monitor with a USB-C cable. Windows can see that the monitor is there in display settings, but the physical display is blank.I've tried swapping out the cable, and it's made no difference.To add to the matter, when I go into display settings on the EliteBook built-in screen, Windows says there are three monitors.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
