Windows update started immediately after login. Now user directories have been cleared and login doesn't work.

I have a laptop with two users, one for my daily use, one for grandchildren to use when visiting.Expecting visiting grandchildren, I tried to login as the guest user yesterday.Immediately, Windows proceeded directly to an automatic Windows update without any opportunity to halt the process.I waited patiently 5 or 6 hours hoping the process would terminate successfully.After watching a black screen with a little flashing arrow shaped cursor, I pressed CTRL-ALT Delete.This opened the task manager, where I terminated Windows.Subsequently, I tried to login again.
