Is there a way to test run updates before full on application

Is there a way to test run an update, to check for corrupted files, etc., and fixing any discrepencies, before update I'd applied. I should think 3-5 days would be sufficient time to make any necessary corrections, run another test run, check the report, again, if no problems arise then run the update. Obviously there isn't any "test-run" performed. Logically speaking, this should be taken into consideration.
