Computer's monitor is off during update

My computer is updating and has restarted for the first time. I'm not sure if it's on because the monitor is completely black (there's no display). However, the status lights are on and the fan is still running. I tried pressing the on/off button before, which interrupted the update and displayed "undoing changes to your computer."Is it normal for the monitor to be off during an update, and will it turn on again? I've been waiting for an hour. It's my first time, LOL.
