Why doesn't a Media Player play queue align with a playlist?

Using Media Player on Windows 11 Home, I've created a playlist that is approximately 4,200 songs. When playing it with shuffle on, the play queue appears to be a much smaller subset of the overall playlist (unlike the playlist, I could not find where the number of items in the play queue are displayed, if indeed that information is available). When comparing the two, I noticed that the play queue did not contain any artists from the playlist whose names were alphabetically past the letter J. Is this a known issue?
