stereo mix not picking up sound

I'm using Windows 10 on my PC and have noticed that stereo mix isn't picking up sound. I've tried using 3.5mm headphones, checked "listen to this device", and disabled all microphones. Additionally, I've observed that when I plug in an auxiliary cable that's not connected to anything, the stereo mix picks up sound from there instead of my main speakers. Is there any way to fix this issue?
