My air pods say that they are connected but sound will only be played through the speakers.

I have connected the air pods before with no issues however, recently the audio will only play through the laptop speakers. I have tried adding them as the default output but I was unsuccessful. I have connected these to my phone and they work fine with that so I am unsure if this is an air pod problem or my laptop's problem.
