What has happened to my Windows10 abd Edge browser

Turned on my laptop today and got some meaningless message abou my portfolio subscription had expired so restarted. Then got a message 'preparing windows', which took some tome always a bad sign. When my desktop finally appeared half my apps had disappeared with no indication of which ones (as previously) and Edge layout had been changed, Why don't MS give me the option of changing or not before doing it?
