Win 10 laptop. Why serial port only duplicates and not allow individual use.

I have a Toshiba Laptop with the 15 pin serial port. It allows orginal screen duplicate to a 2nd monitor but does not allow for separate usage. In other words it doesn't detect it as a 2nd monitor to set up. I've run a few troubleshooters with no success. The laptop also has a HDMI Port and I tried that cable to the monitor and seems it didn't even show a duplicate. Any suggestions are appreciated. The 2nd monitor works fine on another device. jep
