How to convert a logical disk to a primary partition without data loss?

I need to convert a logical disk partition to a primary partition, but I also need to ensure that I keep the data on that partition. There is software licensing on that disk that needs to remain intact, so I'm not sure if I can back up the data that is on the disk, change the partition, then put it back without losing the licensing. Would it be possible to back up the data, repartition the disk, then put it back without losing anything? If not, is there an alternative way of doing this that will result in complete data retention?
