Changing destop icon size and overall layout while using scroll wheel. How to TURN THIS OFF??

I was reading a PDF and went to resize the font w/ my mouse .. but what happened was I totally blew up my desktop icons size and arrangement. It's a mess. Having been on Windows since day 1, this was a first. When did this FEATURE get added? And is there a way to turn if off? With all the other uses of mouse scrolling, this is NOT an accident I want waiting to happen again.
