Media Creation tool only detects Drive 0 with no space when trying to install W10, how can I change this?

Nephew gave me an old laptop to fix. On startup it won't load windows and goes into repair mode and hangs. Have d/led media creation tool and can boot from external DVD drive. Selecting Install from the menu (after specifying Language, keyboard and 64 bit) , and going for the advanced install option. The only drive detected is Drive 0 which windows 10 won't install on as no space. Is there any way round this? Refresh only gives Drive 0, New also won't let me create a drive.Trying the repair options uninstalling updates runs into an error and doesn't work, using the repair option also generates
