Microphone volume very low - not sure how to fix this. Driver reinstallation doesn't seem to solve the problem?

Or am i not doing this right.The only time the volume was "Correct" was this one time where everything was much higher pitched than it should be(squirrel/midget/chipmunk voice)" i have since reinstalled drivers, and now back to low volume on microphone.
