Folders are suddenly empty

I like to keep files mostly word and excel on my C drive. For example: C:/A/Budget/Smiley Credit Card/Due 12 10 $00.00. Suddenly all the folders (ie: Smiley Credit Card) are empty.Data was there yesterday.No error message.
