Disbanding RAID-arrays in Storage Spaces

I recently had to disband a RAID5-array in storage spaces and noticed, that it obviously had to be formatted/data deleted in order for that to happen. I was just wondering whether this would also be the case with a RAID1 (by some Microsoft logic), or if I can actually keep the data on the individual drives when disbanding (since it's just two copies of data)?
