Win 10 freezes if accidentally interrupted while going into sleep mode

When my displays time out, the options are set to give me 5 minutes to hit any key to bring them back, preventing sleep/standby. That works fine, except if I am a few seconds too late and the sleep sequence has already silently started. When that happens the computer stays locked with the screens dark and the fans running, requiring a forced shutdown. It there a solution?
