Can't open, reset or uninstall Messenger or WhatsApp

A few days ago WhatsApp wouldn't open. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it. It would not uninstall - error 0x80073cfa. Today the same thing happened with Messenger - same error code. Why won't Windows let me uninstall a nonessential app? How do I get these apps back to functional status?Both Messenger and WhatsApp are grayed out in my apps list in Settings. I'm running Windows 10 Pro.
