how do i know i am talking with a microsoft tech

i recently had my windows locked down due to phishing. i called and resolved the problem. But they wanted me to log on to my financial info to make sure there were no bogus charges. I did NOT do that. How do I know i am talking to a real microsoft person...and why would thay want me to log on to my financials
