Microsoft Store has lost its "Check for Updates" button

I run Windows 10 Pro on a Dell laptop. This morning, I opened the Microsoft Store to check for updates but found the "Check for Updates" button was missing. After a bit of trouble, I managed to reinstall the Store, but the button was still missing. Where did the button go? How do I gethe button back? How do I work around the problem?
