.Net framework 2.0 service pack

Because my pc hangs periodically, I checked out the on-screen advice when
this happens but I have anti-virus and anti-spyware in place and do not have
any add-ons for IE6.
I then checked for MS security updates (though my pc is set to automatic
download and install) and found that Net framework 2.0 service pack was
available.
I downloaded and tried 4 times to install but each time the installation
failed.
I do not know if there is a connection between the problem in line 1 and the
failure of the download.

Running XP Media Centre Edition: IE6. Intel dual core processor.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
