Windows protection error

I have Windows 98 Second edition. I made no changes to my computer in the
recent past. All of the sudden, when I boot up I get this message "Windows
Protection Error." It suggests that I open in safe mode. I am able to do
that. What do I have to do to get rid of this problem and start using my
computer in the normal mode? Thanks.

Post the exact error message.

Potential diagnosis:

Restart the computer, but immediately after POST, start pressing the F8 key
to bring up the Boot Menu, choose create a Boot log.

Windows will attempt to start in Normal mode. If it fails again, reboot to
DOS only or Safe Mode [using the above], ensure you can view all files if
Safe Mode, if DOS you will need to type - attrib bootlog.txt -h. -at the
DOS prompt, use EDIT to open the file.
Open bootlog.txt in the root. Search for Failures, font failures MAY not be
what your looking for, check at the bottom of the file..

I found the bootlog file. Three types of items failed to load.

1. Numerous c:\widows\fonts\ xxxx.ttf files. Examples: \NWGTHC.TTF,
NWGTHCB.TTF. All these are followed by "failure code 016"
2. c:\windows\system\hudson2.ttf and hudsonb2.ttf followed by failure code
016.
3. Many files in the root directory. All of them have ttf extension. Here
is the list. c:\befrisky.ttf, cgposter.ttf, gilshad.ttf, graphit.ttf,
lucasit.ttf, lucasr.ttf, miles.ttf. All these are followed by "failure code
2."

I don't know what these file failures represent. If any additional
information is needed, pleae let me know. Thanks. Satish

Those are true type fonts {.ttf} which may not be the same for everyone's
system.
Generally these aren't a problem when they supposedly fail, though that may
indicate you have a corruption issue.
CastleCops shows:
Product / Version / OS / Mfg / Lang / Type
"Windows" / "98 Upgrade" / "WIN98" / "Microsoft" / "English" / "Operating
System"

YOUR problem is that these should NOT be in the root folder. What did you
install recently that would have added fonts to the root of the disk?
OR have you recently scanned your system for viruses and SpyWare and other
hacks? Something placed these files where they're not supposed to be.
Scan this system for viruses NOW before proceeding further.

BTW: You didn't post the full error.

If at all possible, revert to an older saved registry before this started
to occur.
First using Safe Mode or Normal, check to make sure you can view all the
files.
Go to Start > Settings > Folder Options > View and make sure you have Show
All Files checked AND that Hide File Extesions for Known File Types is
unchecked. IF these were not set before like this be EXTREMELY careful as
you will now be able to see, delete, and otherwise mess up the system by
removing folders [like SYSBKUP which is hidden] and files you couldn't see
before.

Then open Explorer and go to Windows[or whatever]\SYSBKUP and look at the
file dates on the rb***.cab files, find one before the error occured, and
note the name [example - rb004.cab].
Then restore the registry.
You do this by starting into DOS [press F8 repeatedly after POST - a
reboot] and choosing DOS Prompt only.
Then at the prompt C:\> you type - scanreg /restore - and choose the one
which you found was before the error occurred.

After you do this SCAN for viruses then remove those *.ttf files from the
root of the drive [move them to somewhere else temporarily -don't move or
mess with them until you scan for viruses]. Check your programs for errors
related to fonts. You can also check to see if you have these fonts in your
WINDOWS\FONTS folder, though it seems like you may have downloaded a FONT
pack, if so it may have had an uninstall. Look in Installed programs and
see, if no uninstaller, and no program has an error, then just delete those
fonts.

IF you installed anything after the date of the restored registry, you will
need to re-install it, but first make sure it isn't carrying anything that
can infect you..

From now on: DO NOT install, expand, unzip, into the root of the drive.

Thank you, MEB.

First, let me apologize for not posting the full error message. The reason
was the error message was long and I had no way to copy or electronically
send it to this computer. The only option was to write everything by hand
and type it again here.

I did restore an older registry and that solved the problem.
