98SE Runs in MSDOS Compatibility Mode

B

Bob L.

I have just upgraded my system with a new motherboard (Biostar NF4 Ultra
A9A) that has an NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset. Does anyone know how to get
the 98SE operating system up and running with this motherboard or maybe a
work around? I am able to boot the system but the Desktop looks like a Safe
Mode display and the Hard Drive or CD drive is not listed in Device Manager
only a Floppy Drive. I can access the FAT partition with no problem as it is
listed in My Computer as C drive. The system runs in MSDOS Compatibility
Mode. I tried to do a registry repair deleting the NOIDE value but there
isn’t one listed. What could be causing the problem? Can anyone help me in
rectifying the situation? Any help or response would be most appreciated?

You will need to install the chipset drivers.
It's possible that the board is too new to have win98 drivers.
If that's the case, you will need to use a supported OS...probably win2k or
XP

MEB,
No, I didn't install the chipset driver as I could not find one. I do
not believe they have a 98SE driver for the nVidia Nf4 Ultra chipset. I tried
installing the VIA Chipset driver you have supplied but it is not compatible
with the nVidia Nf4. Is there another 98SE system driver that would work with
the nVidia Nf4 Ultra chipset?

Thanks, Bob

Philo,
Does anyone make aftermarket or custom drivers for these situations,
where the manufactureer does not provide them?

Thought that might work, that's what I was directed to at the main Taiwan
site. Found some others that had people TRYING to get it to work, but
nothing I would direct you to as THE answer.
All the other sites [mirrors or other nation Biostar sites] do NOT have
drivers for 9X, the systems supported are 2000, XP, and VISTA.

You could try on some of the tweak or mod sites like MSFN Or Tom's Harware
to see if anyone found something or modified files for it..

If the mfg does not provide win98 drivers...then they just plain do not
exist.

My recommendation would be to use a newer OS or else get an older board with
win98 support.

If you absolutely insist on using that board and win98 the only work-around
would be to
get a PCI controller for your harddrive and CD ( One that you can confirm
has win98 support)

Of course you would also need to get win98-supported cards for any on-board
devices...
but your machine would need PCI slots rather than PCI-e

I just went through this on a 2.6Ghz Gateway E6100. Nothing worked.
Then I tried this. Go into the BIOS. Change ATA/IDE Confiuration from
"ENHANCED" to "LEGACY". No more MSDOS mode!
