Filters to help make this group more useful

H

Henry

I've found that plonking certain messages improves the value of
this newsgroup. Relative newcomers to usenet may not know that
most clients provide a simple filter mechanism by which posts
containing specific terms, or posts from specific senders, can
be filtered. In my case, I use Thunderbird, and built filters to
Mark As Read all messages by parties who seem useless (such as
Alias), and all messages with the following terms in the subject:

linux
Ubuntu
Red Hat
XP
suck
sucks
crap
troll
trolls
!!!
???
then add your choice of pejoratives

You will still see virtually everything that is significant and
useful, and it won't take as long to review the subjects.

You can judge various posters (including me) for yourself,
though Alias is obviously as useful here as my dog's dewclaws.
Frank's unnecessary ad hominem attacks reduce the value of his
posts, which otherwise might capture more of my attention.

I suggest you make a whitelist with the filter>

Sure - this topic is a great stimulus for jokes, but in fact
I've trimmed this newsgroup by 40% or so, and removed most
useless ego-driven abusive posts.

My reading time is reduced, though the remaining posts include
virtually everything that helps me understand and use Vista.

I'm with you Henry. Lets work to make this newsgroup a fanboy free
zone.
