Problem with computer freezing while using IE 6

This is making me nuts. I can't figure out what is causing this
behavior.

I have Windows ME (fully patched and updated). I have an old NetVista
2276 (which, I think, is known for freezing problems).

Mostly, it locks up (or freezes) when I am using Internet Explorer 6
(fully patched and updated) and loading some heavily graphic site like
Mapquest or Google Maps or Webshots.

I have a different harddrive than the one originally installed (so
it's a used hardrive installed about two weeks ago).

I have a different version of Windows ME. The original one (OEM) got
destroyed when the hardrive failed.

I've seen this freezing behavior when using Windows ME in combination
with Internet Explorer 6.

The freezing also happened (but, MUCH-MUCH less) when I was using
Ubuntu with Firefox.

I ran an 8-1/2 hour memtest about a week or so ago -- with no errors.

I thought it might be something to do with Ad-Shield but still happens
when Ad-Shield in not installed.

The thing that I find really interesting is that the computer froze
much-much less when I was using Ubuntu with Firefox. I haven't tried
Windows ME with Firefox to see if that would also cut down on the
freezing.

This freezing is recent behavior -- past six months or so. I was
initially wondering if it had something to do with the harddrive
failing. Obviously, not, since I've replaced the harddrive.

Anyone got any idea what else can be causing this or how I can narrow
it down further to see where it's coming from??

Oh, it can freeze dozens of times in an hour. This is not just a
couple of times a time, intermittent behavior.

I can't remember the path, but, you need to get to the Hardware Acceleration
Slider and set it to one notch above None.
Restart your machine and see if that fixes the problem, if so, you need to
update your video or mouse drivers. Maybe some nice person will pop in and
give you explicit directions to the "Hardware Accel Slider."
Heirloom, old and it worked for me!

I would, since it was a used drive, overwrite the entire disk. That
would bring it to a clean state\ to reinstall on.

Also if you haven't for a while, maybe open the computer and maybe
reseat the ram make sure connections are
tight, be sure to ground yourself to the chassis for a moment so you
don't make a static spark and clean
the fan if it needs it, I use a vacuum, people say you can make your
fan not work because the suction
will make it spin too fast but it's never happened to me.

Also before this if you have a live Ubuntu see if the same happens
with it.

But before that maybe go under internet options general then setting
and see how much the temporary internet folder is set to. Hope you
find something that works.

I've already done everything that's been mentioned. As I already
stated, this thing has a replacement harddrive that was partioned and
reformatted and a totally different version of Windows ME was
installed. I do nightly maintenance on my computer (delete temp
files, scandisk, defrag).

I've been searching and searching for weeks/months and I've finally

Apparently, there are many-many motherboards out there in IBM
NetVista's (and other brands) with bad capacitors. From what I've
found out, IBM extended the warranties until 2005 to cover these
machines. But, they never did a product recall. I'm sure that
violates some Federal law.

There have been ECA (engineering change announcements) on the
NetVista's. IBM never notified customers that there was a problem
with the capacitors on the motherboard, unless the customer knew this
information already.

I'm gonna call IBM/Lenovo on Monday and see if I can get a replacement
motherboard. If I can't, I'll be sending the motherboard to
http://www.badcaps.net/ to get the capacitors replaced, since I don't
have the tools necessary to solder in new capacitors.
