my sapphire video card cannot enable 3D acceleration

hi all.

Oh dear! I tracked a problem, but I need more help in fixing it.

I just bought a new sapphire 9600xt, to replace a "crappy" nividia
gf5200.
[yes, the graphic improvements are Treeeemendus!]
I was somewhat mystified when my Gothic II would stop at the game
loading screen when the exe called it up, even though this old card
would not work well, i expected to be able to get maybe to the loading
screen, at least.

my new 9600xt has the same problem!
also morrowind will also not load.
but baldurs gate II and neverwinter nights will load.

at first i thought this was an issue with the new cd-rw rom.

The morrowind files has a "program flow" sheet and it shows that the
loading stops at the video card.
the directx test, while everything shows to be good, the 3d
acceleration just crashes the test back to the desktop, probably this
is why I have these troubles.

the smartgart indicates that while the direct draw is enabled, the 3d
acceleration is not, thus only non-accelerated games will load!

I tried changing, in the bios, the card TO and From, "enable agp to/
from pci".
....did no good.

As I left the computer to come to the library, i checked the
IRQ slots and low and behold the soundcard is on the same 11 IRQ as
the 9600xt!
*this* is not good!

SIS741gx motherboard
c-media soundcard, soon to be replaced with a turtle beach santa cruz,
when and if it comes in the mail.
sapphire atlantis 9600xt 256 card.
win98se

Could this IRQ thing be the problem?

my motherboard only has apparently three slots for cards, the agp, and
two pci slots and the soundcard is on the bottom, probably i need to
move it to the next slot up. Oooooh, there are a LOT of things
demanding those IRQs!
Steerings, holdings.....
can someone please direct me to some good references on how to diddle
with IRQs.

What else could be "wrong" here? Seems that right this moment the
card
cannot be 3D accelerated, as it stands.

bad card?
I would guess that there must be some conflict somewheres, or a
setting that i have yet to find.

too too bad that people have to be a "tech master" just to use a
computer!

thanks...freestone

There's a description about PCI interrupts here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182604

Holders for steering can generally be ignored - it would be unlikely that
they are creating a problem. If you remove them they will be reinstalled
anyway.

While interrupt problems are a possibility, I would be also recommend
looking at the device drivers you are using, and the version of DirectX. It
is possible that the two just happen to be incompatible, and changing the
version of one or both would fix the problem.
